2016 MCU: WinterIron snippet

A/N: This is a snippet from the middle of an untitled longer fic. Live with it.

Bucky stood in the common living area of Avengers Tower and felt hunted. Most of the other Avengers were present and the pushing that especially Clint and Natasha were doing regarding his so-called romantic feelings for Steve was infuriating him and making it hard to keep the Soldier under control.

Bucky loved Steve but wasn’t attracted to him in the least. Steve was his brother in all but blood. And he knew that Steve wasn’t attracted to him either. Their long embarrassing conversation after Steve had overheard Natasha berating him for not acting on his feelings had made both of their positions clear. But it had also revealed his true feelings for someone else.

So now, Natasha and Clint were constantly bugging him about dating Steve, Bruce was leaving articles and links to web pages about the health benefits of expressing your feelings laying out everywhere, Thor kept telling him tales of shield brother lovers from Asgard, and Steve was pressing him to stop being afraid of what he felt.

Bucky had spent the night researching and talking to JARVIS in his locked bedroom. He had decided to just man up and let it all hang out, so to speak. Between himself and the AI, they had come up with an appropriately sappy way of confessing. Bucky was terrified out of his wits but was a stubborn jerk and wasn’t going to back down from his plan, even though the presence of the entire team wasn’t something he had expected.

He stood at the floor to ceiling windows and gazed out at the city skyline. Natasha and Clint were working with their weapons, she was sharpening a knife and he was fiddling with the string on his bow. Thor was drinking an ale and reading something on his specially designed tablet. Bruce was typing on his laptop. And Steve, the ass, read Bucky well enough to know that he had something up his sleeve and was simply sitting on the sofa and waiting for the show.

Then JARVIS began the cue that alerted Bucky the time was upon them. A music riff spilled out across the penthouse and as the intro guitars segued into the vocal point, Bucky slowly turned and began to sing, his soft tenor putting power and emotions into the poignant words.

And I feel,

All the faint morning light,

Filled with hope ’cause you’re here in my life,

And we’ve gone,

From the edge of our souls,

Made it back to a place we call home.

Bucky faced the back of the room and gazed at the man standing there. He knew that most of the others thought that he was singing to Steve and was just too worked up to look at him, not realizing that anyone else had come in, but Steve knew that he was looking exactly at who he meant to and smiled.

You, see me through,

I was alone in the dark and the fear was my truth.

As he sang, Bucky remembered everything leading up to this moment, from the first moment he met the other man until now. The fight last week had been tormenting him and he needed to explain, through the incredibly appropriate lyrics of this song, that he had changed his mind and that they were worth it.

Yeah, all the things that you are,

Beautifully broken, alive in my heart,

And know that you are everything,

Let your heart sing and tonight, we light up the stars,

All that you are.

As he reached the end of the first verse, his eyes searched the man’s in the back and begged a question. The nod he received in return told him everything was going to be fine, and that the other man would go along with the deeply romantic and incredibly sappy moment.

As the next verse started, everyone but Steve was startled to hear the words coming, not from Bucky, but from the man who had entered the room and triggered JARVIS to start the song. Tony slowly strolled forward and around the sofa as he sang, truly from his heart.

I feel wrong,

I’m so human and flawed,

I break down even though I’m still strong,

And time, will make fools of us all,

Builds us up, and then laughs when we fall.

You, pull me through,

When I’m alone in the dark and the fear was my truth.

Tony reached Bucky’s side and grinned as he sang, knowing the shock he was providing the others and reveling in it while at the same time feeling a sense of peace that Bucky wasn’t going to leave him the way so many others had done.

Yeah, all the things that you are,

Beautifully broken, alive in my heart,

Tony reached one hand out and grasped Bucky’s metal arm as he sang the line and raised it to lie on his own chest, filled with the reactor that kept him alive.

And know that you are everything,

Let your heart sing and tonight, we light up the stars,

All that you are.

Bucky resumed the singing as his hand was pressed against Tony’s chest.

You’re the sound of redemption,

The faith that I’ve lost,

The answers I’m seeking no matter the cost,

Tony took up the words, recalling as he sang, a damaged assassin crawling through a broken window in a college dorm room.

You opened the window,

Now I can see,

And you taught me forgiveness by giving your love back to me.

As the chorus began once more, the men joined their voice in song and stared deeply into one another’s eyes. Tony knew that Bucky had forgiven him his harsh words and Bucky understood that Tony finally believed that Tony didn’t blame him for his past.

Yeah, all the things that you are,

Beautifully broken, alive in my heart,

And know that you are everything,

Let your heart sing and tonight.

Yeah, all the things that you are,

Beautifully broken, alive in my heart,

And know that you are everything,

Let your heart sing and tonight,

Let your heart sing and tonight, we light up the stars,

All that you are.

Oh I feel,

All the faint morning light,

Filled with hope ’cause you’re here in my life.

As the music trailed off, Bucky pulled Tony forward and their lips met, the kiss one that wouldn’t be out of place in the most romantic of movies, as their love became obvious to everyone in the room, the tears on their faces mingling. But Bucky and Tony were oblivious to anyone else, content to be in the arms of the one that they thought they would never be able to have, for always.
